The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza
Mori Trust invited BAM to design the landscape areas and green walls of the second EDITION in Tokyo, a boutique structure designed by Kengo Kuma Associates.
Based on the Ginza city planning green building requirements the project was required to have more green space at ground level than was permissible by the architectural programs. Thus a solution for a green wall on the first floor facade was introduced, creating vertical landscape elements that became part of the overall facade design. The landscape design at the street level included the building’s West and South sides, with a two story green wall juxtaposed with the hotel entrance glass volume. The Roof is an outdoor social space that is used both in daytime and evenings by the guests with programs from al fresco dining to larger cocktail groups and late evening snacks.
The landscape design creates an internal facing garden by creating a set of hedge walls that both create privacy and intamacy for the guests but also control the outward views from the Roof. BAM worked closely with the nurseries to select and install the hedges early in the construction process ensuring they could be trimmed into architectural wall forms by opening.
The planting design utilizes large terracotta pots in a variety of sizes throughout the deck. Japanese pines, ferns, and maples form the primary palette.
