Shanshui Façade
The design idea for the façade, composed of 2,620 unique ceramic printed panels, comes from Chongqing’s position at the confluence of two rivers. The project includes a hotel tower, an office tower, and a retail podium. BAM was invited to design the 12,600m2 façade to unify the programs of the podium.
The site is in Chongqing’s district visible from Hongjin Road and Xinggai Avenue Road. BAM’s design process involved drawings in long scroll formats which would span the length of the entire facade. From initial sketches of river confluences, a drawing process was developed in Rhino as pixels that could be broken down into individual panels.
The façade is a three-layer system with hidden LED lighting, a layer of ceramic printed glass on one side, and silk screen printing on the other. The pixelated color drawing visible from the interior and clearly showing at night is the ceramic printed element. Six types of silkscreen patterns create a fine texture over the surface of the façade, especially visible from up close when walking along the building during the daytime.
