‘10 Years of Dumb’ BAM Retrospective
BAM’s 10-year retrospective exhibition was organized in the Tabula Rasa Gallery of Beijing’s 798 district. After ten years of pursuing almost anything, BAM’s exhibition, ’10 Years of Dumb’, was a deliberate occasion to reflect on the past in a time and place manic to forge the future.
BAM designed the exhibition in two main rooms focused on BAM’s primary project types. The landscape room featured BAM’s urban landscapes, resorts and hotels, and garden projects displayed in drawings, models, and videos. The second room was aimed at BAM’s installation projects, containing a huge variety of drawings and photographs accompanied by over one hundred models and mockups of BAM’s installation projects.
In addition to the display of BAM’s projects, BAM took the opportunity to realize a variation of BAM’s first garden design, which had been rejected by the prospective client in Cambridge Massachusetts. The Qingdao Garden entrance features astroturf wrapping every surface, a fluorescent green ‘fortune cookie tree’, and a wall-mounted goldfish aquarium.
Other notable details included a row of 5 electric neon palm trees lining the exterior entrance of the gallery, a video room, a library and bar, and a wall of 50 wickless hand candles. To round out the BAM experience a section focused on lifestyle of BAMMERS included photos and three mannequins displaying Halloween costumes and BAM Racing Team uniforms.
BAM developed its design practice by seizing any opportunity which came in the door. Over the past 10 years, BAM’s unconventional strategy of “just say yes” has led to countless mistakes yet ultimately has resulted in a portfolio of exuberant works with a seemingly incomprehensible breadth. This includes designs for costumes, parades, building facades, parks, musical events, furniture, and even wickless hand candles. As such, the exhibition aims to be honest, even showcasing flaws in BAM’s logic. Although recognized as one of China’s leading studios, BAM continues to pursue divergent paths, pushing ever deeper into the realms of design.
